Profile
Seiju Fujikage    Third-generation head of the Fujikage Ryu Fujikage Kai

The original founder, Seiju Fujikage, developed Fujikage Ryu from the Fujima school of dance and honored for her great cultural contribution as a pioneer of new dances. She was also the wife of author Kafu Nagai and the grandmother of Seiju Fujikage, the current third-generation head who shares the same name. In addition to participating in dance performances throughout Japan and cultural activities focusing on Kyoto as the third-generation head, Seiju Fujikage also places much effort in teaching Japanese classical dance to the young generation. She received the Commissioner for Cultural Affairs Award in 2017 in recognition of her contributions over many years.

Since ancient times, Japanese classical dance has been a performing art that has expressed the human emotions of the Japanese which accompanies song and instrumental music. Various types of Japanese classical dance have been developed and handed down through the generations. These include Nenbutsu Odori, a dance with an invocation to the Buddha, gagaku and bugaku, which were offered at rituals performed at the Imperial Court, and sarugaku, a style of song and dance, nogaku, and kabuki. Japanese classical dance was developed and handed down together with kabuki dance which was turned into a stage performance.
